Taliban’s acting Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, in a phone conversation with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, expressed concern over the rapid deportation of Afghan migrants from Iran, urging for a gradual and humane process. The two officials also discussed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and emphasized the responsibility of Islamic countries in addressing the ongoing situation.
According to a statement released by the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday (Asad 5), Iran has pledged that the deportation process will be carried out gradually and with respect for the dignity of Afghan nationals.
This conversation comes as Iran intensifies its deportation of undocumented Afghan migrants. Iranian officials recently announced that nearly 800,000 Afghans have been deported so far this year—a continuous and alarming trend that appears to be accelerating.
Beyond the issue of deportations, the Gaza crisis was also a central topic of discussion. Amir Khan Muttaqi described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “critical” and called on Islamic countries to fulfill their moral and political responsibilities. He urged them to contribute to ending what he described as the “collective suffering caused by famine and genocide committed by Israel.”
In turn, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi proposed convening a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) foreign ministers to explore solutions to the Gaza crisis.
Since the beginning of Israel’s military assault on Gaza, approximately 60,000 people have been killed and more than 144,000 injured, with millions displaced and widespread destruction reported across the region.
International aid organizations continue to warn about rampant civilian casualties and an escalating famine in Gaza. The Gaza Health Ministry has confirmed that at least 125 people—including 85 children—have died due to malnutrition in recent months.
