Masoud Pezeshkian, the newly elected President of Iran, arrived in Pakistan today (Saturday, August 2, 2025) for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. The visit follows the trip made by former President Ebrahim Raisi to Pakistan in April 2024.
According to Pakistani media, Pezeshkian was received in Lahore by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Governor Sardar Salim Haider. Shortly after his arrival, the Iranian president paid tribute at the mausoleum of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, a renowned Muslim philosopher and poet.
Pezeshkian is scheduled to travel to Islamabad tonight, where he will hold meetings tomorrow (Sunday) with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari.
Several agreements in areas such as trade, border cooperation, cultural exchange, and local development projects are expected to be signed during the visit. Both nations aim to boost their current bilateral trade volume, which stands at approximately $3 billion.
Key topics for discussion include energy collaboration, establishment of joint border markets, and improvements in cross-border infrastructure connectivity.
This visit takes place against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions, particularly following recent hostilities between Iran and Israel. Pakistani officials have reiterated their support for dialogue and diplomacy, emphasizing their ongoing communication with Iranian authorities.
President Pezeshkian’s trip is seen as part of broader efforts to preserve and expand Tehran-Islamabad relations and to promote regional economic and political cooperation
