Ashraf Ghani: Afghan Women Must Return to the Skies

Former President of Afghanistan, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, has emphasized the importance of restoring women’s access to education and employment in the aviation sector, praising the capability and professionalism of Afghan women pilots and crew members.

Reflecting on a memorable flight to the Kamal Khan Dam in Nimroz, Ghani said, “The entire flight crew, including the pilot, were Afghan women. It was one of the proudest moments of my life.” He added that Afghan women deserve to once again occupy professional roles—particularly in aviation—where they previously excelled.

Ghani noted that during the republic era, Afghanistan witnessed a remarkable rise in women’s participation in aviation, with airlines like Kam Air showcasing the success of female pilots and flight attendants. He expressed hope for a day when women, from pilot to crew, once again lead flights in Afghan skies.

His remarks come amid growing concerns over the systematic exclusion of women from professional and educational sectors under Taliban rule. “This is not just my hope,” Ghani concluded, “but the dream of millions of Afghans who believe in justice, equality, and progress.”
