July 24, 2025 – Arg News: The United Nations has warned that up to three million Afghan migrants could be forcibly returned from Iran and Pakistan by the end of this year, while Afghanistan remains gripped by a severe humanitarian crisis.
According to a new UN report, many of those returning face serious human rights violations, including torture, arbitrary detention, and threats to their personal safety—particularly women, girls, journalists, civil society activists, and those affiliated with the former Afghan government.
The findings are based on interviews with 49 returnees, revealing a pattern of abuse and reprisals by Taliban authorities.
Women and Girls Face Elevated Risk
The UN says gender-based persecution is widespread, with women and girls facing heightened danger simply because of their gender. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stressed that “no one should be returned to a country where they face the risk of persecution due to their identity or past affiliations.”

Mass Deportations Intensify
Since early 2025, over 1.9 million Afghans have returned—۷۰% of them forcibly deported, mainly from Iran. In just one recent period (June 24–July 18), more than 410,000 Afghans were deported from Iran alone. Over 300,000 others were returned from Pakistan.
Reports and footage from border camps show inhumane conditions and mistreatment by security forces, drawing widespread criticism from rights groups and Afghan communities.
Taliban Denials vs UN Documentation
Despite Taliban claims of a “general amnesty” for those connected to the former regime or NATO forces, the UN says returnees continue to face arbitrary detention, ill-treatment, and intimidation, especially those seen as politically or socially vulnerable.
